A Warm and Inviting Backyard Space
Located in the heart of a busy city, this backyard provided an excellent opportunity for collaboration with a creative homeowner. The goal was to create a functional dual-purpose building: a carport that could be converted into an elegant covered deck for entertaining. The original backyard was open and visible to the closely located neighbours and contained an existing structure consisting of six posts and a roof.
The homeowners wanted to be consistent with their style, aiming for the same rustic and reclaimed feel that they used in their home. They wanted to blend cedar and copper, so they would age together with a rustic look.
The Finished Product
We used 32 oz copper for the first twelve inches of the roof surface followed by cedar shake. Custom copper eavestrough with copper downpipes completed the look. The accent wall was adorned with reclaimed barn board to blend nicely with the copper and cedar of the roof. We created both a front and rear wraparound decks to serve as access to the home provide extra seating in the backyard. Given the visibility of the backyard, cedar privacy fences were constructed to coordinate with the structure. Echoing the use of 6×6 posts in the fence and the design of the new garage door, we were entrusted to fashion a custom gate between the house and carport to complete their backyard oasis.
